The Cours de la Révolution, five minutes by car, is the heart of Annaba, a long tree lined promenade with cafés, French colonial buildings and the theatre. In the evening, families stroll under the trees and the cafés fill. It is the best place to feel the rhythm of the city.
Hippo Regius, about four kilometres from the hotel, preserves the ruins of the ancient Roman city, with its forum, baths, villas and mosaics. Above it, on a hill, stands the Basilica of Saint Augustine, built in the late nineteenth century in honour of the famous bishop of Hippo. The basilica and the ruins together make a meaningful half day.
The Sidi Bou Merouane mosque, in the old town, is one of the oldest in Algeria, built in the eleventh century with columns taken from Roman buildings. Visitors should dress modestly and respect prayer times.
The beaches of Annaba stretch along the bay and the Corniche toward Cap de Garde. Chapuis beach and Fellah Rachid beach, a few kilometres away, are popular in summer. Further west, smaller coves near the cape are quieter.
Seraïdi, around a dozen kilometres up the road from the hotel, is a mountain village in the Edough massif, cooler than the city and surrounded by cork oak forests. The views over the bay are spectacular, and the area is popular for walks and picnics.
For food, Annaba offers grilled fish in the port restaurants, chorba soup and bourek, and pastries in the many bakeries of the centre. During Ramadan, the city transforms with evening markets and late night cafés.
